Fluids
First of all, make sure to get all the necessary fluid changes out of the way before you depart for the Sturgis Rally. Check your engine oil, transmission fluid, primary fluids, and brake fluid, and replace or replenish them as needed. You don’t want to get caught with bad brake fluid in the middle of a long ride!
Battery
Is there anything more frustrating than a motorcycle engine that refuses to start? Nobody needs that heartbreak, especially not during the Sturgis Rally. You can avert disaster by confirming that your battery has adequate voltage before you hit the road. You can keep the battery on a trickle charger during periods of disuse to keep it in good shape.
Brakes
Test your brakes and give them a thorough inspection before your departure. Use a flashlight to check the front and rear brake pads, looking for excessive or uneven wear. Depleted brake pads should be replaced right away. If your brakes are not working properly despite having fresh pads, they should be examined by a professional. Never take chances on a motorcycle with faulty brakes!
Tires
You should definitely start your Sturgis adventure with a good pair of tires. Most motorcycle tires feature bumps in the tread that serve as wear indicators. When the tread wears down to the level of these bumps, it has reached a depth of 1mm. The tires should ideally be replaced well before this level is reached.
If your tires are in good shape, go ahead and check the air pressure and inflate them as needed. Maintaining the correct air pressure will improve your motorcycle’s performance and extend the life of your tires.
Electrical
Last but not least, complete a full electrical check. Check your high beams and low beams, your left and right turn signals, your front and rear running lights, and your brake lights. Replace any dead bulbs, and have the electrical system repaired by a professional if needed.
